In 1951, MIT Lincoln Laboratory was established to develop an air defense system for the nation. The resulting system, the Semi-Automatic Ground Environment (SAGE), connected over 100 radars, 24 direction centers, and 3 combat centers. The system was revolutionary in its complexity and its approach to computing.
