Making A Difference in Our Community
Since 2006, Lincoln Laboratory ‘s community outreach programs have made significant impacts on our community through educational programs in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) for students in kindergarten to high school and through community service projects. Community outreach programs continue to grow.

EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH IMPACTS

The educational programs leverage the talents of the technical staff to encourage young people’s enthusiasm for STEM.

Science on Saturday
  • 21 events (2 identical presentations per event) since spring 2006
  • 3,500 attendees each year (700 per event at 5 events/school year)
Classroom Presentations
  • Annually reach 7,000 students at more than 100 schools in Massachusetts and New Hampshire
Robotics Outreach at MIT Lincoln Laboratory (ROLL)
  • Mentored 8 teams in 2009–10 school year; grown to 12 teams in
    2010–2011
  • Participated in Cambridge Science Festival
  • Technical staff served as advisors to Arlington High School’s robotics team
  • New partnership planned with John D. O’Bryant School of Math and Science in Roxbury
Collaboration with MIT’s Office of Engineering Outreach Programs (OEOP)
  • Hosted students from all four OEOP programs, providing presentations and tours
  • Sponsored students in the residential programs that are geared to students in underserved communities

COMMUNITY SERVICE IMPACTS

Support Our Troops
  • Has sent about 4 “care” packages a week to U.S. troops stationed in Afghanistan and Iraq
  • In 2008, 352 packages sent to troops! (This figure includes boxes of warm coats collected for Iraqi children)
Bike & Hike the Berkshires Fundraiser for the Multiple Sclerosis Society
  • Raised more than $15,000 in 2009 and again in 2010
Memory Walk in Support of Alzheimer’s Association
  • Raised $9,000 in 2009, the first year the Laboratory participated
  • Raised $13,000 in 2010
Drives
  • 500 coats donated in 2009 and 435 donated in 2010 Coats for
    Kids drive
  • 1,930 items donated in the 2009 Hannah’s Socks drive
  • $1,140 raised at used-book drive; funds benefit Community Giving
    at MIT and educational outreach
  • Food drives collect donations of both goods and funds for local food pantries; 2009 drive for Burlington Food Pantry raised $1,623 and provided goods for 170 families
