Herb Viggh Biography

Dr. Herbert E. M. Viggh is an Assistant Group Leader in the Weather Sensing group where he works in the area of net-centric distribution of weather data products.

He has been employed by MIT Lincoln Laboratory since 1992. His other research interests include remote sensing, signal processing, optical systems, space surveillance, space robotics, and asteroid detection. He was manager of the Earth Observer-1 ground software team and lead for the SBV Processing, Operations and Control Center. As a member of the LINEAR asteroid search team, he is co-discoverer of over 167,000 asteroids, including 1039 near-earth asteroids. During 1988-1992, he worked at the Boeing Company in Seattle Washington as a research engineer in space robotics, autonomous vehicles, and sensor fusion. He also worked as a flight test engineer testing flight management and navigation systems on commercial aircraft.

He received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in aeronautics and astronautics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge Massachusetts in 1985 and 1988 respectively, and the M.S. and Ph.D degrees in electrical engineering and computer science from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge Massachusetts in 1988 and 2001, respectively.
