Abstract

In this paper, we describe our work on a new, integrated system approach to machine translation and translingual information access. Our translingual information system integrates a two-way, interactive, English/Korean translation module (for human/human interaction) with a translingual information detection/extraction module (for human/computer interaction). In the first part, we give an overview of the system structure and show how the core language understanding technique, which utilizes a language- neutral meaning representation as an interlingua, can be applied both to translation and to translingual information access. In the second part, we describe our previous work in text translation for military domains, including experimental results, technical challenges, and the lessons learned from interacting with the military user community. In the third part, we discuss our current research effort in translingual information retrieval, which is focused on enabling an English speaker to access information in both Korean and English using concept-based search technique.
