Dr. Gene Itkis joined the Information Systems Technology Group, now the Cyber Systems and Technology Group, in the summer of 2009. He is interested in various applications of cryptography. His current projects include anti-tamper technologies, key management, and security for DNA identification systems.

Dr. Itkis came to MIT Lincoln Laboratory after ten years at Boston University, where he conducted research and taught courses in cryptography, algorithms and other areas of CS (see http://www.cs.bu.edu/~itkis/ for details). While at BU, he was the principal investigator of the NSF Trusted Computing grant, founded the Applied Cryptography and e-Security group, the Industry Talks series, and served as the associate director for research at the Center for Reliable Information Systems & Cyber Security (RISCS), NSA National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education. In spring 2006, Dr. Itkis was a visiting scientist at MIT Cryptography and Information Security Group.

Prior to Boston University, Dr. Itkis worked as a senior researcher in NDS Technologies, where as a security expert, he participated in the design and development of smart-card-based Conditional Access systems for pay-TV, including interactive systems and electronic commerce. As Chief Architect of Content Protection, he defined NDS strategy and represented NDS in the Copy Protection Technical Working Group (CPTWG), Digital Audio and Video International Council (DAVIC) and MPEG-4. In DAVIC, Gene served as Vice-Chair, and led the Security and Content Protection work.

Dr. Itkis received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Boston University in 1996. He also spent two years as a post-doc in the Technion, Israel, working with professor Shimon Even on graph algorithms.
