Bob Atkins biography

Dr. Robert G. Atkins is the Head of the Advanced Technology Division. Prior to this position, he served as the Assistant Head of the Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance and Tactical Systems Division at MIT Lincoln Laboratory and earlier, Assistant Head of the Homeland Protection and Tactical Systems Division and as Leader of the Advanced Capabilities and Systems Group.

He began working at the Laboratory as a cooperative student and research assistant in the Air Defense Techniques Group, where his work focused on the modeling of electromagnetic scattering and radar cross-section prediction.

Upon completion of his doctorate, he joined the technical staff of Lincoln Laboratory. He became Assistant Leader of the Systems Analysis Group in 1999 and Associate Leader of the Sensor Exploitation Group in 2000, before returning to the Systems Analysis Group in 2003.

Dr. Atkins has expertise in the areas of radar cross-section modeling, automatic target recognition, and the systems analysis of air defense and surface surveillance systems. In his current position, he leads efforts aimed at the assessment and rapid development of critical new combat capabilities to address current shortfalls in the areas of force protection and counter asymmetric warfare. He holds SB, SM, and PhD degrees in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
