Wind turbine interference mitigation using a waveform diversity radar

Summary

Interference from the proliferation of wind turbines is becoming a problem for ground-based medium-to-high pulse repetition frequency (PRF) pulsed–Doppler air surveillance radars. This paper demonstrates that randomizing some parameters of the transmit waveform from pulse to pulse, a filter can be designed to suppress both the wind turbine interference and the ground clutter. Furthermore, a single coherent processing interval (CPI) is sufficient to make an unambiguous range measurement. Therefore, multiple CPIs are not needed for range disambiguation, as in the staggered PRFs techniques. First, we consider a waveform with fixed PRF but diverse (random) initial phase applied to each transmit pulse. Second, we consider a waveform with diverse (random) PRF. The theoretical results are validated through simulations and analysis of experimental data. Clutter-plus-interference suppression and range disambiguation in a single CPI may be attractive to the Federal Aviation Administration and coastal radars.

DABS coverage

Summary

DABS sensors are to be installed at FAA ASR and ARSR sites throughout continental U.S. as a part of the evolutionary upgrading of the third generation ATC Radar Beacon System (ATCRBS). It is therefore important to establish: (1) the degree of 3D coverage which would be provided by such deployment; and (2) a reasonable balance between number of installations, sensor maximum range, and coverage. This paper reports on a coverage study in which DABS coverage within CONUS was projected on a statistical or "percent coverage" basis by purely geometrical considerations. Results are given for CONUS, the eastern half of the U.S., and for the Golden Triangle. Profile coverage ("line-of-sight coverage down to...") is given for the Boston-NYC-Washington corridor.

Concept and plan for the development of a weather support subsystem for Air Traffic Control

Summary

This report summarizes the results of a study to: (1) investigate the primary needs of air traffic controllers, flow controllers, and central flow controllers for weather information, (2) define a cost effective system concept to meet these needs, and (3) lay out a plan for the development of the proposed weather subsystem to support Air Traffic Control. The recommended system will provide rapid geration and dissemination of reliable use oriented observations and very short range severe weather forecasts (up to 30 min.) to facilitate controller planning. This new capability will: 1) reduce weather induced controller work load peaks, 2) permit controllers to coordinate and preplan aircraft rerouting for weather avoidance, 3) achieve an improved balance between the inefficiency of overreaction and the essentials of safety, 4) facilitate controller response to pilot requests for weather data on a work load permitting basis, and 5) enable the issuance of accurate weather advisories. The system will also provide rapid generation and dissemination of reliable short range forecasts (up to 4 hours) to permit early introduction of necessary flow control procedures. This new capability will: 1) decrease problems for controllers, 2) increase acceptance of flow control, and 3) increase traffic flow efficiency without decreasing safety.
