IPC design validation and flight testing final report

Summary

A series of flight tests were conducted to evaluate the collision avoidance system known as Intermittent Positive Control (subsequently re-named Automatic Traffic Advisory and Resolution Service, ATARS). These tests involved both professional test pilots and subject pilots selected from the aviation community. This report includes analysis of the collision avoidance algorithm, pilot visual acquisition performance, and pilot reaction to avoidance instructions.

Simulation of surveillance and processing algorithms proposed for the DABS mode of BCAS

Summary

Surveillance Processing Algorithms for the DABS Mode of BCAS have been implemented in software for the non-real time processing of air-to-air link data. The data to be processed may be either AMF recorded air-to-air data, or data derived from simulated flight encounters. Examples of simulation trials for a specific collision encounter are presented with illustrate the impact of increased ATCRBS fruit levels upon the performance of the surveillance processor. This document also provides detailed definitions of the surveillance processing algorithms.

Empirical characterization of IPC tracker performance using DABS data

The performance of a set of tracker algorithms proposed for use in the DABS-based Intermittent Positive Control (IPC) collision avoidance system is assessed. The position projecting tracker algorithms are subjected to actual surveillance data obtained at the Lincoln Laboratory DABS Experimental Facility. Effects of turn-rate, speed, wind and surveillance accuracy upon heading error, speed error and position error are presented.

MLS multipath studies volume II: application of multipath model to key MLS performance issues

Summary

This report summarizes MLS multipath work carried out at Lincoln Laboratory from March 1974 to Sept. 30, 1975. The focus of the program is the development of realistic models for 1) the multipath in representative real world environments and 2) the multipath characteristic of candidate MLS techniques. These multipath and system models are used in a comprehensive computer simulation to predict the strengths and weaknesses of major MLS systems when subjected to representative real world environments. The report is organized into two volumes. Volume I describes the algorithms and validation of various portions of the program. In Volume II, the simulation (or selected portions thereof) is applied to key multipath related MLS issues. Mathematical models are given for the major MLS multipath sources (ground reflections, building and aircraft reflections, and shadowing by objects and humped runways), and it is shown that they agree (Doppler and scanning beam) considered in phase II of the U.S. MLS program are presented together with validation by comparison with theory and bench tests. Also presented are the results of a general study in motion averaging. The (validated) computer simulation (and portions thereof) is then applied to studying 1) the critical areas required by the TRSB system to avoid excessive reflection effects, 2) the expected TRSB performance of a specific TRSB system at Friendship International Airport (MD).

Summary

This report provides a full discussion of the design of the DABS channel management function. Channel management regulates all activity on the RF channel, scheduling ATCRBS interrogations and DABS roll-call interrogations and replies. Channel management arranges for multiple interrogations when required to satisfy both the surveillance and the communications functions of the sensor, and for reinterrogations in the event of link failure. The report consists of three major parts: Part I, Channel Control; Part II, Roll-Call Scheduling; and Part III, Transaction Preparation, Target List Update, and Transaction Update. Together they encompass the five basic subfunctions of channel management.
