Jeffrey Chou - Photonics Research Scientist
It's being surrounded by people who are just as curious about science as I am that makes the Laboratory a good fit for me.

In a nutshell, Jeff's job is to figure out new ways to control light. He does this by researching materials, nanostructures, and system designs, and this research is applied to improve imaging, sensing, and biomedical technologies at the Laboratory. To him, collaborating with universities is critical to keeping fresh ideas flowing. During Jeff's second year here, his team received funding to partner with Prof. Juejun Hu's group at MIT on research into advanced phase-change metamaterials. This work is helping to open up an entirely new field of photonics, and together the team has made incredible progress. He feels encouraged at the Lab to try out new ideas based on the latest research from academia, something that harmonizes well with his everyday curiosity about science. He's not alone in this: Jeff says it's being surrounded by people who are just as curious about science as he is that makes the Laboratory a good fit for him.
