The Effects of Array Configuration on Circular STAP Performance

Abstract In this paper, we consider how variation in the sector size affects STAP SINR performance for different STAP techniques. Sector size influences the achievable sidelobe level, and to less extent, detection sensitivity and metric accuracy. As the sector size increases, the ability to control the sidelobes and cancel clutter/interference improves due to the increase in the number of degrees of freedom. In this paper, we evaluate the effects of sector size on SINR vis-a-vis several STAP techniques (e.g., PRI-Stagger, Factored-STAP) for different numbers of pulses and look directions. We also compute the minimum detectable velocities for the different STAP techniques versus sector size. Another parameter of interest is the inherent degrees of freedom as indicated by the eigenvalues of the covariance matrix.
