John Adams

What do you do at the Laboratory?
I am the chief financial officer responsible for providing financial services and accounting operations that support the Laboratory's research and development mission.
How has your career evolved?
When I joined the Laboratory from a senior executive role in the Department of the Navy, the transition was twofold. First, it provided a valuable opportunity to deepen my understanding of research and development within a federally funded R&D center — an area I had limited exposure to previously. Second, it allowed me to become more directly engaged in the tactical aspects of financial management in support of the research mission. Both experiences have sharpened my financial management acumen in ways I never could have imagined. Without question, I am a stronger and more effective financial manager as a result of my time at the Laboratory.
Where have you traveled before, and where would you like to visit?
As a Marine veteran, I’ve had the privilege of traveling extensively around the world, particularly throughout the Far East. My journeys have taken me to Japan, Korea, Thailand, the Philippines, and China. I’ve also traveled to New Zealand, which remains one of my favorite places in the world. One destination still on my list is Iceland, a place I would love to experience.
From day to day, where do you find inspiration or motivation?
I draw my greatest inspiration from the Laboratory’s mission. Former director Eric Evans once described the Laboratory as a "national treasure," and I wholeheartedly believe that is true. It is deeply motivating to contribute to that mission every day. I also find tremendous energy in working alongside so many brilliant, dedicated colleagues whose commitment to the Laboratory’s purpose is both humbling and inspiring.
What are you most grateful for in your life?
I am profoundly grateful for the remarkable opportunities I’ve had throughout my career. From beginning in finance as a Marine, to serving my country over a 30-year career in the Marine Corps, to gaining perspective in the commercial for-profit sector, to advancing as a government senior executive, and ultimately joining the Laboratory as its chief financial officer — each step has been transformative. Every experience has helped me grow as both a financial manager and a leader. Most importantly, these opportunities have shaped me into a better person.
