What do you do at the Laboratory?

As a graphic artist with a background in science illustration, I work with staff members to find clear and creative ways to visually communicate their ideas. This can include technical or conceptual illustrations, poster and chart design, workflow diagrams, and more. I am currently working on building a digital asset library of illustrations.

What do you enjoy most about working here?

I love that my work as an artist at the Laboratory bridges the gap between art and science and constantly encourages me to learn. It allows me to cross paths with passionate subject matter experts from a wide range of disciplines, which gives me the opportunity to learn new material that I wouldn’t necessarily have come across on my own.

What inspired you to pursue this career path?

I discovered the importance of effective visual communication of scientific concepts while doing ecology research as an undergraduate. I realized that research is rarely communicated in an accessible way, and that it can be unrealistic to expect people to care about something they haven’t been given the tools to understand. I sought out a way to translate my own research on invasive plant species into a multimedia art installation that would unconventionally engage and educate viewers. The project’s success reinforced my belief in the power of visual storytelling to make scientific knowledge more accessible and alter perceptions. I was thrilled to discover that I could pursue a career in science illustration and contribute to important research by creating compelling visuals.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I enjoy hiking and camping, playing board games and video games, practicing circus arts, hanging out with my cats, and picking up new hobbies! I recently started learning how to make chainmail (both armor and jewelry) and am excited to incorporate it into a Renaissance faire costume.
