Roy Bondurant BiographyDr. Roy S. Bondurant is Associate Head of the Communication Systems Division at MIT Lincoln Laboratory.

Dr. Bondurant joined the Laboratory in 1983 as a staff member in the Communications Division to work on space laser communications. His work initially focused on the use of semiconductor lasers in heterodyne systems and then broadened to include the overall design of optical communications terminals. He pioneered the use of a modular approach to optical-terminal design with fiber optics, resulting in a patent on a fiber-based spatial tracking system.

From 1997 to 2002, Dr. Bondurant was the Laboratory's program manager for a major space demonstration program called GeoLITE (Geosynchronous Lightweight Technology Experiment). The GeoLITE program was the first successful demonstration of high-rate space laser communications. Dr. Bondurant was awarded the 2001 Aviation Week and Space Technology Laurels Award for Space for his role on the program, and Lincoln Laboratory was a co-recipient of the Department of Defense’s David H. Packard Award for its role on the GeoLITE program.

Dr. Bondurant holds SB, MS, and PhD degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, all in electrical engineering, with emphasis on optical communications and quantum optics. He was the recipient of the Ernst Guilliman Award for best undergraduate electrical engineering thesis in 1978 and has since published over 27 technical papers in the areas of quantum optics, photonics, and optical communications.
