Mr. Jeffrey C. Gottschalk is the Leader of the Cyber Systems and Operations Group at MIT Lincoln Laboratory.  He is responsible for understanding key operational challenges, developing and leading research and development efforts in support of national cyber missions including computer network defense, attack, and exploitation. 

Focus areas include technologies and systems for developing awareness and understanding of the cyber domain while aiding operational decision-making, command and control across the cyber domain.  Technical areas of interest include network-based intrusion detection systems, information pedigree and trust, software architectures for information sharing and security, and decision support analytics for fusing and understanding data across multiple cyber and kinetic missions.

With an academic background in physics and astronomy, he developed wideband signal processors for radio telescopes, and measured and analyzed millimeter-wave molecular emissions to better understand the star-forming process within our galaxy. At Lincoln Laboratory, he worked as a staff member in the Wideband Satcom, RF Milsatcom, and laser communications areas.  Technical areas of interest included characterization of RF propagation phenomenology, high-speed (40 GHz+) digital electronics, and coding for fading laser communications channels.  He then served as the chief engineer for the Transformational Communications Satellite System (TSAT) at the USAF Space and Missiles Systems Center, Los Angeles AFB, CA.  His responsibilities included reducing technical risk of TSAT's space segment, leading system-wide technical assessments, and overseeing systems engineering practices.  Returning to Lincoln Laboratory, he worked in the Tactical Systems mission area, where he assisted in leading test and evaluation activities to improve the air vehicle survivability and his technical areas of interest included infrared sensors and phenomenology.

Mr. Gottschalk is a member of the IEEE and holds a BS degree in physics and astronomy from the University of Maryland at College Park and an MS degree in astronomy from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
