Dr. Malina A. Kirn is a technical staff member in the Cyber Analytics and Decision Systems Group at MIT Lincoln Laboratory. She uses machine learning, statistics, big data technologies, and principles of software architecture to develop high-function prototypes addressing challenges in cyber security.

Prior to joining the Laboratory in 2016, Dr. Kirn was a software engineer, technical lead, and engineering manager for five years at two startups: Opower and Palantir. Her technical expertise focused on big data technologies, such as Spark, and full stack DevOps, including Chef. Her academic experience includes eleven years of research in astroparticle physics at the High Resolution Fly’s (HiRes) Collaboration and high-energy particle physics at the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) Collaboration. Her research in physics emphasized the use of statistics and machine learning techniques, such as neural networks and grid computing.

Dr. Kirn holds a PhD degree in scientific computation from the University of Maryland at College Park and MS and BS degrees in physics from Montana State University at Bozeman.
