Dr. Vineet Mehta is a technical staff member in the Cyber Systems and Technology Group at MIT Lincoln Laboratory. His current interests include cyber security analytics, machine learning, complex networks, and cyber-physical security.

Dr. Mehta has been at MIT Lincoln Laboratory since 2000. His initial focus was on high-speed networking over multi-wavelength optical networks. He contributed to the design and prototyping of novel hybrid electronic/optical packet network nodes. He also contributed to transport protocol enhancements for improving throughput performance over high-speed links. He worked on developing architectures, performance analysis, network protocol enhancements for airborne optical, hybrid optical/RF networks, and satellite networks. Dr. Mehta also contributed to the development of optical communications terminal architectures for airborne platforms, based on novel volume grating optical filters.

Dr. Mehta served as the Chief Network Engineer for the Transformational Satellite program at US Air Force Space and Missile Command through the Intergovernment Personnel Act from 2006 to 2009. This program was poised to provide multi-gigabit per second IP networking capability via a geostationary communications satellite constellation.

Subsequently starting in 2009, Dr. Mehta served as a technical staff member in the Weather Sensing Group, focusing on the development of prototype systems and technologies for enhancing air traffic management automation and efficiency. He was promoted to Assistant Group Leader of the Weather Sensing Group, where he led advancements in air traffic decision support systems for weather assisted departure management, efficient departures in the presence of wake vortices, airport arrival/departure management, enroute/terminal arrival management, and aviation information management. He has also developed techniques for complex network-based characterization of the air transportation system, as well as probabilistic techniques for characterizing air traffic performance under uncertainty.

As his interests have evolved to Machine Learning, Graph/Network Analytics, and Cyber Security, in 2013 Dr. Mehta joined the Cyber Systems and Technology Group to pursue these interests.

Prior to his work at Lincoln Laboratory, Dr. Mehta was a member of technical staff at Bell Laboratories, Lucent Technologies from 1997 to 2000. His focus was on research and development of high speed networking technologies, including Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), Frame Relay, Internet Protocol (IP), Ethernet, and Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) systems.

Dr. Mehta’s broad interests include machine learning, graph/complex network analytics, cyber security, air traffic management, decision support systems, software systems, scheduling & planning algorithms, real-time signal processing, acoustic & electromagnetic wave propagation, fluid dynamics, fiber-optic networks, RF & optical wireless networks, and performance of Internet Protocols. He has served on a number of technical and policy committees for US Government organizations including OSD, Air Force, DARPA, FAA, and NSF.

Dr. Mehta received a BS in aerospace & ocean engineering from VA Tech, a MS and PhD in electrical engineering from University of Massachusetts Lowell. He has published over 25 technical articles, and given a number of technical presentations. He has served as an Adjunct Faculty at University of Massachusetts Lowell since 1996. He has been on several masters and doctoral thesis committees. He is a member of IEEE, Acoustical Society of America, and Sigma Xi.
