Dr. Swaroop Vattam has been a member of the technical staff in the Human Language Technology Group since he joined MIT Lincoln Laboratory in January 2016. His research is broadly focused on the applications of machine reasoning and machine learning to natural language processing problems. He is currently investigating data-driven model discovery systems in an effort to tackle the problem of automated machine learning.

Prior to joining Lincoln Laboratory, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the Naval Research Laboratory, where his work focused on plan and intent recognition in the context of autonomous systems research. Previously, he was a research scientist in the College of Computing at the Georgia Institute of Technology, working on knowledge extraction and semantic search technologies.

Dr. Vattam is an active contributor to the artificial intelligence (AI) research community. He has served on program committees for several AI conferences, including the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) Conference, International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI), International Conference on Case-Based Reasoning (ICCBR), and Advances in Cognitive Systems (ACS) annual meetings, and on organizing committees for the Goal Reasoning Workshop and the ICCBR Case-Based Agents workshop. He is the co-recipient of several honors, including the National Research Council/American Society for Engineering Education Postdoctoral Research Publication Award (2014); National Science Foundation Innovation Corps Grant (2013); Best Paper award at the 8th Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Conference on Creativity and Cognition (2011); and a recipient of Outstanding Dissertation (2012), and Outstanding Graduate Research Assistant (2011) awards from the College of Computing at Georgia Institute of Technology.

Dr. Vattam earned his PhD degree (2012) in computer science from the Georgia Institute of Technology, MS (2003) from the University of Georgia with a specialty in AI, and BE (1997) in computer science from the National Institute of Engineering, India.
