Reuel B. Swint

Dr. Reuel B. SwintDr. Reuel B. Swint is a technical staff member in the Quantum Information and Integrated Nanosystems Group, pursuing research in high-power laser diodes, surface-emitting lasers, and integrated photonics.

Most recently, Dr. Swint led a team that developed integrated turning mirrors in high-power edge-emitting lasers to convert them into surface-emitting lasers, which have application in scaling toward large two-dimensional arrays of high-power diode lasers that can be beam-combined for high brightness. He has also conducted development for hybrid integration of III-V devices with silicon-based waveguide components. In earlier work, he developed vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser and microlens arrays for electronic steering of optical beams, and investigated nanoscale selective-area epitaxy for uniform quantum-dot gain at the 1.5 µm wavelength.

Dr. Swint has authored or coauthored numerous papers and conference presentations in the field of diode lasers and integrated photonics technology. He is a member of the IEEE Photonics Society, serving on the Technical Affairs Council in 2013 and as the chair of the Boston chapter from 2008 to 2010.

Dr. Swint received a BS degree in engineering from Baylor University and MS and PhD degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. As a graduate student, he conducted research in high-power single-mode diode lasers.
