Emma Kotar

What does your role entail?

I conduct systems analysis studies that are briefed to Laboratory colleagues and government sponsors for critical U.S. Department of War missions. The systems analysis involves developing physics-based models for various technologies related to sensors, aircraft, satellites, communication systems, navigation, and data exploitation.

What inspired you to pursue your field?

I've always liked to wrap my head around a complex problem and try to make sense of it. But I initially didn’t think STEM was for me, as I thought to be successful in STEM you have to get it naturally. My high school physics teacher helped me realize that passion and dedication could go just as far as natural ability. He showed me how creative you can be solving math and physics problems, inspiring me to pursue physics in college. In college, I gained hands-on research experience and discovered that I enjoy exploring open-ended questions. The Laboratory ties together the fun of researching a new problem with solving critical national security needs.

Which resources have helped you succeed at the Laboratory?

I've participated in mentoring programs, which have helped me meet people from across the Laboratory and receive career advice from experienced staff. Wellesley College, my alma mater, has a strong alumnae network at the Laboratory that has been a constant support system for me.

How do you spend your time outside of work?

I do tap, contemporary, and jazz dance with a local dance company for advanced dancers who do not have careers in dance. I also like to practice yoga, play softball, go on hikes, and volunteer at my local Boys and Girls Club.
