Herman Pretorius

Herman Pretorius

Herman Pretorius is a technical staff member in the Advanced Imager Technology Group. Currently, he works on the development, characterization, and maturation of novel low-light imaging sensors.

Pretorius has led the development of system and components used for low-light imaging for more than a decade. Currently, he leads numerous efforts looking at next-generational low-light imaging sensors — including single-photon-sensitive photodiodes. He leads numerous programs that focus on the full swath of developments: from early-stage research on novel materials or designs, to development of techniques for smarter data processing, through technical transition. Along with technology development, Herman leads the Air Force Advanced Capabilities and Technologies Team.

Pretorius has authored and co-authored numerous papers and conference presentations in the fields of detector and laser technology. Pretorius received BS and MS degrees in electrical engineering from the University of New Hampshire. Prior to joining Lincoln Laboratory and earning his degrees, he served as a Combat Infantryman in the U.S. Army, deploying in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
