Khusbu Patel
When did you join the Laboratory, and what made you decide to pursue a career here?
I joined the Laboratory in July 2018. Previously, I was working on MIT campus in the Mechanical Engineering Department, where I performed cradle-to-grave grant administration for 13 laboratories. I wanted a change in job environment, and the Laboratory offers that sweet spot between academia and industry. Plus, I was already working with a few people here.
What does your role entail, and what is the most exciting and/or challenging aspect?
My role as a business manager is dynamic; I go from putting together spend plans, to dealing with space issues, to working with our Financial and Security Services Departments on shipping classified materials. Not having a technical background, I find the most challenging and exciting part of my job is understanding the technical work in my group's portfolio. I have learned that if you approach any of the technical staff, they can talk about their work for hours. These conversations are a great way to not only learn about technology development but also get to know my fellow group members.
Are you involved in any employee resource groups (ERGs), outreach, or other activities?
I am currently a Communication Systems division representative for the Lincoln Laboratory Women's Network and part of the Pan Asian Laboratory Staff Network. Through these ERGs, I meet folks outside of my group and division whom I would normally not have a chance to interact with.
Where have you traveled or would like to travel?
Prior to kids, my husband and I traveled a lot. We have been fortunate to see many places around the world, including India, Bangladesh, Turkey, Germany, France, Switzerland, England, Iceland, and Puerto Rico. My husband and I are planning a trip to Peru, hopefully soon.
Where are you from?
I am originally from New York City and mostly lived in Woodside. Queens. I moved to Massachusetts in 2012 and have been here ever since.
What are your hobbies?
Recently, I have been really into paint by numbers, which puts me in a zen state. I'm also hoping that it may improve my painting skills!
