Grace Remillard
What does your research entail?
I perform intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) systems analysis. I was drawn to this role because of how interdisciplinary it is and how I get to step back and have a big-picture idea of technical concepts. I recently completed a project assessing cloud data sources for airborne systems, presenting my work at a seminar for the ISR Systems and Technology R&D area. That was a great way to wrap up my first year here!
What has been your experience as a new employee?
I joined the Laboratory in 2023 after graduating from UMass Lowell with bachelor's and master's degrees in electrical engineering. As an early-career staff member, I find that my career is in a dynamic state, and I'm learning so much. Every couple of months feels very different; once I understand one aspect of the job, there is always a new problem to solve, which keeps me engaged with the work. I have ample opportunities to grow professionally, including Lab-wide research seminars, presentations and other front-facing interactions with the Lab community, and free courses offered nearby at our Forbes Road Facility.
Why is the Laboratory a good fit for you?
I like working environments with a wide array of evolving projects, and the blend of academia and industry is the perfect combination for me. I love the research aspects of the job without the competition of academia. A nice surprise has been all the colleagues from within and even outside my group who are willing to explain their work and difficult technical concepts. And my mentors have helped me prepare for meetings and presentations, provided insight into Lab culture, and made me feel welcome here.
Which activities do you enjoy in your free time?
I enjoy various hobbies, especially now that a graduate degree isn't taking up all of my time! I'm teaching myself to crochet and learning new recipes. I also play video games such as Tears of the Kingdom, and I recently finished Dredge.
