Corrie V. Smeaton
Dr. Corrie V. Smeaton is an assistant group leader of the Optical Engineering Group at MIT Lincoln Laboratory. Her research interests include technology development of novel optical systems utilizing freeform optics, including ultra-wide field-of-view telescopes and compact spectrometers. Since joining the Laboratory in 2011, Smeaton has served as optics lead and unit engineer on a number of fielded novel optical systems prototypes in the areas of free-space laser communications, hyperspectral imaging, lidar, infrared systems, and computational imaging.
Smeaton also co-leads the Laboratory’s Optical Systems Technology internally funded research and development portfolio through the Technology Office. The portfolio includes novel optical technologies that address long-term challenges and emerging issues within Lincoln Laboratory’s core mission areas. In this role, Smeaton develops long-term strategy for new optical technology programs, manages currently funded programs, reviews proposals, and provides technical support. Smeaton also co-leads the core technology team within the newly formed Civil Space Systems and Technology Office. In this role, she identifies Laboratory technologies that will help enable current and future civil space missions.
Smeaton holds a BS degree in physics from Purdue University and MS and PhD degrees in optical sciences from the University of Arizona. She is an active member of the optics community. She is a senior member of the International Society for Optics and Photonics and has presented her work at a number of conferences. She enjoys outreach activities to teach the community about optical engineering.
